The Children's Museum of Memphis houses interactive exhibits about science, art, math and health. It is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Pink Palace Family of Museums is made up of five museums: the Pink Palace, the Lichterman Nature Center, the Coon Creek Science Center, the Magevney House and the Mallory-Neely House. The Pink Palace Museum's exhibits chronicle the history of the mid-South's culture and people. In addition to the exhibits, the museum also houses a planetarium and an IMAX Theatre. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 65-acre Lichterman Nature Center has animal exhibits, an arboretum, a two-story boardwalk and an underwater viewing area. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free every Tuesday after 1:00 p.m. The Coon Creek Science Center houses fossils and remains of vertebrates found in western Tennessee. Public access to the Science Center is for organized groups and arrangements must be made in advance.
The National Civil Rights Museum is located at the infamous Lorraine Motel, where civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated in 1968. The museum details the civil rights movement in the United States, the life and assassination of Dr. King and the impact of his death on the civil rights movement. It is open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, it is open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free every Monday after 3:00 p.m.
Graceland, rock-n-roll icon, Elvis Presley's 14-acre, former home, is open for public tours every day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition to his private home, his clothing collection, car collection and his personal jets are also on display. The National Historic Landmark, Sun Studios, is widely considered to be the birthplace of rock-n-roll. It is open to the public for guided tours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day. The city's famous Beale Street is full of blues clubs and bars, as well as shops and restaurants and is a "must-see" for music fans.
Mud Island River Park has a museum, a park and an amphitheater that draws top name performers. The park has paddleboats, a monorail and a model of the Mississippi River. The museum contains 18 galleries that document the history of the Mississippi River and the impact it has had on the people that live and work on its banks. Mud Island River Park is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Memphis in May is a month-long festival with events taking place all over the city. There is a barbecue cooking contest, live musical performances and vendors. Every June, the city's Italian Festival celebrates Italy and its people with food, music, arts and crafts, bocce ball tournaments, pizza tossing contests and a volleyball tournament. The Cooper-Young Festival takes place every September and features live music, food and craft vendors and centers around a large invitational art show.
